~I Love Vintage Jars~

Just ask my husband! Whenever we're out picking, he always finds me rummaging through dusty boxes, in search of an old Ball or Kerr. He lovingly exclaims, "Oh, you and those jars!"  I can't help it. I'm drawn to them.

We tend to think of bygone days as a 'simpler' time. Sure, perhaps there was less stress in many ways but think of all the work to be done! My grandma made everything from scratch. Bread, noodles, clothes...
Imagine all the canning going on back then. I try to can 'something' every year. It's certainly not out of necessity! I do it for the sheer joy, yumminess and satisfaction.

I adore the blue ones. I read somewhere that the blue color resulted from the minerals in the sand along Lake Michigan. Isn't that interesting?
I bought several from a woman at a nearby garage sale. She was so happy to be rid of them. Her husband told her not to bother...who would want an old jar? She hauled them out of the basement anyway. Lucky for me!

Here's a wonderful article that gives some history behind my beloved, vintage jars.

He also has this handy chart showing the different designs and dates:

What about you? Do you have a passion for old jars?
